How to Check Car Oil

how-to-check-car-oil

If you know how to check your car’s oil, you’ll be able to make sure your engine is properly lubricated and functioning as it should. Oil protects your engine’s internal parts and is vital to the function of your vehicle. Regular oil changes are part of vehicle maintenance. However, knowing how to check oil levels in a car at home can help you maintain the correct levels in between service appointments.

Instructions on How to Check the Oil Level in Your Car

Depending on the age of your vehicle, your vehicle may either have an electronic oil monitor or a traditional dipstick. You can check your owner’s manual to see which your vehicle is equipped with. If you do have a traditional dipstick, you can check your oil levels with the steps below:

  1. Park your vehicle on level ground. Give your vehicle time to sit, so that the engine is cool.
  2. Pop the vehicle’s hood and locate the dipstick.
  3. Remove the dipstick from the engine and wipe it clean.
  4. Re-insert the dipstick back into its tube. Pull it out once more and check both sides of the stick to see where the oil levels are. There should be two marks or a cross-hatched area on the dipstick. If your oil level is between these marks, your oil levels are good.
  5. If your oil levels are below these marks, you’ll need to add more. Make sure you check the owner’s manual to ensure you purchase the correct type of oil. Then you can remove the oil filler cap and add in a small amount of oil until your dipstick shows you’ve reached the proper levels.

Why Should You Check Your Car’s Oil Level?

As mentioned, oil helps your engine run properly. Performing monthly oil checks at home is a quick way to make sure your vehicle has the oil it needs. It can also help you catch signs of leaks early on. However, if you notice steam rising from under the hood, or your car’s hood is hot to the touch, you could have an oil leak that is causing your engine to overheat. You’ll need to seek service immediately.
